11 Places on St. Maarten / St. Martin That Could Serve As Movie Decor (And Have Not Done So Yet)
St. Maarten already has been the decor of many movies. Recently, the third series of Below Deck recorded on island was added to the island’s impressive resume as background for television and cinema.
1. Lovelock bridge
2. That Yoda Guy
No need for a new, complicated layout of Mos Eisley. No need for bringing in Yoda and stormtroopers to shoot a new episode of the Star Wars series. The originals are already at the Yoda Guy Exhibit! So George Lucas, fly in to the attractive backgrounds of St. Maarten and let’s get that camera rolling in a galaxy close by for you.
3. Rainforest Adventure Park Platform
Now here is a scenery that can be used in multiple cinematic settings. From a romantic comedy sunset view over 5 Caribbean islands, or a hot James Bond type chase down the steepest zipline in the world. Last but not least, the Rainforest Adventure Park platform offers itself as great camera angle for airplanes leaving the St. Maarten Airport runway.
4. Underwater SXM
So let’s say that, as mostly is the case, mr Bond’s chase starting at the zipline would allow for some extra movie minutes before the “baddies” are caught. That would leave time for a spectacular continuation under water, the main characters playing a visually rewarding hide and seek in between of the over 300 submerged statues in the UnderSXM park.
5. Grumpy’s
A 21st century opera decor could be the series of megayachts surrounding bar Grumpy’s. These ships are often too big to make it into the Simpson Bay lagoon, where Below Deck was shot.
6. Ultimate Club, Sonesta
If you stay at the Sonesta Maho Ultimate Club, do not forget to check out their new rooftop bar. This view is ready for the big screen: runway shots all the way from Maho Beach to Rainforest Adventure Park.
7. Mix
The same applies for rooftop bar Mix at Divi Little Bay All-Inclusive Resort with a commanding nightly and sunset view over Philipsburg and Great Bay, with cruise ships leaving the harbor. Made for Hollywood.
8. Downstreet
Beauty and the Billionaire was shot in Philipsburgs Old Street, but for a true feel of the Caribbean, the Downstreet area would be even more authentic. Both many historic buildings and the quiet street scenery provides for a true Caribbean town background.
9. Trou de David / David’s
Sometimes, Nature provides science fiction settings by itself and needs no adjustment for film. The very scenic, 25m wide sinkhole with two natural bridges at David’s Hole / Trou de David make for a great setting in a nature film. Or for a horror movie, as the original name was “Devil’s Hole” for the gurgling cauldron of waves at this location. The ruins of old Belle Creole would add to such a setting.
10. Cruise port
In “Speed 2”, a rudderless cruise ship was making its way to Marigot harbor – a scene many residents from both sides of the island took part in as volunteers. The imposing view of a cruise ship, or multiple, is best recorded at the St. Maarten cruise port. These massive oceanliners make for a great decor from close by.
11. Mullet Bay Beach
What would this list of potential movie sets be without a beach, as crown jewels of St. Maarten / St. Martin island beauty? There is 37 of them, but we selected one that ticked various boxes. Mullet Bay Beach is one of the five most famous beaches of St. Maarten / St. Martin, and listed in many rankings of best Caribbean beaches. Not without reason given its natural beauty. For movie directors, its nearby Golf Course provides for additional cinematographic opportunities.
If you are thinking how to get there with your camera, buses and rental cars might be too small – plenty of sizeable taxis around however!
