THE DAILY HERALD: DUTCH GOVERNMENT TO PROPOSE LISTING IGUANA SPECIES TO A HIGHER PROTECTED STATUS
In October, the Dutch government will propose upgrading the protection status of the Lesser Antillean Iguana (Iguana delicatissima) at the Cartagena Convention on Aruba. This change would provide the highest level of protection, prohibiting possession, trade, and disturbance. The Dutch government intends to suggest the reclassification of the Lesser Antillean Iguana from Annex III to Annex II of the Protocol pertaining to Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW). The species, found exclusively in St. Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean, faces threats from habitat loss, poaching, and competition with non-native Green Iguanas. It is crucial to engage in conservation efforts and remain observant to protect the species.
