10 BEST ST. MAARTEN EXCURSIONS ON LAND

Within St. Maarten / St. Martin’s vast palette of great things to do, making a selection of those is a hard thing to do. Leaving beaches, shopping, the great excursions on and under water aside, here is a first shortlist of very diverse and great St. Maarten and St. Martin tours you can take on land – in random order.

1. The Flying Dutchman Zipline at Rainforest Adventure Park

Brace for a unique experience when stepping into the Soualiga Sky Explorer. The Explorer brings you to a magnificent panoramic platform with views on all sides. There is no need to take the worlds steepest zipline, the Flying Dutchman down – but daredevils probably will. An informative museum can be found at the bottom of the zipline.

2. Do an Escape Room

No team building experience as exciting as the Caribbean’s only Escape Rooms, by Dutch Blonde Beach Bar on the Philipsburg boardwalk. For those not in the know as yet: escape rooms are well designed, themed puzzle rooms based on stories or historical settings. At Dutch Blonde Beach Bar,  you can select from four rooms in totally different contexts: The Blackbeard’s Brig Escape, The Lucky Duck Speakeasy, What Happened in Ravenwoods and The Lost Jewel of Zanzibar. End your adventure with a locally crafted beer and Dutch pancake!

3. Discover the age of pirates at Rusty Parrot

Informative for both parents and children , the Rusty Parrot pirate park gets you up to date on the true story of pirates. If you came in by cruise, you probably saw its inspiring setting of a sunken gallion already from afar. Its show making use of 21st technology is available at many times during the day. In addition, an exhibit and pirate shop is available, and a pirate bar on the deck.

4. Go active with Trisport

If you are more of an active visitor, you are going to love Trisport. Kayaking, biking and running, there is barely a sport that Trisport is not involved in. Next to tours, they organize many sports events – see our St Maarten / St Martin Events Calendar for what challenge is next.

5. Toppers Rhum Distillery & Restaurant

Topper’s, St. Maarten’s largest Rhum distillery, offers a fun outing for all. A great<informative and tasty Rum Tour brings you a brilliant experience continued at Topper’s famed restaurant at the Simpson Bay Lagoon. A great souvenir shop and gelateria are also part of the fun.

6. Enjoy SXM Beer Brewery

Not far from Toppers is the SXM Beer brewery. One of St. Maarten’s largest craft beer breweries, the brewery is open to the public and has a shop and bar on its premises. SXM beer also does tours and, clearly, tastings in their Cole Bay brewery.

7. Ride a Seaside Horseback Ride

Seaside Nature Park offers horseback ride tours along the shores of Cole Bay Beach. A great way to explore this nature area with some commanding views over the Caribbean. Spoiler alert: your horse might take a very special and experiential detour at the end of the route.

8. Go down the Pelican Peak Zipline

The Pelican Peak zipline goes down the steep rock formations at the cruise port, offering great views of nearby Philipsburg and Great Bay. It is a great combination with the Rusty Parrot pirate park as the zipline ends next to its landmark Galleon.

9. Learn and See Nature at Amuseum Naturalis

Natural (and) history museum Amuseum Naturalis is in the Old House plantation house near Orient Bay. Its great and informative exhibition about island nature, history and poetry is freely on offer by the volunteers making this amazing place happen. Views from its backyard over the Atlantic are commanding.

10. St. Maarten Heritage Museum

This compact Philipsburg museum, also free of entry, offers a beautiful collection of impressions and artefacts of the St. Maarten of the olden days, but also has permanent exhibitions on slavery, culture, fortresses and natural history. The museum has a great gift shop with hand made items and historical map and painting copies.
