When strolling through the untamed landscape of St. Maarten, look for ‘The Pope’s Head Cactus’ (Melocactus Intortus), one of the most interesting succulents in the Caribbean! This distinctive plant is easily recognized by its round, green base and striking red, bristly cap known as a ‘cephalium’. The cephalium, which may reach a height of one meter, gives the cactus its distinctive appearance.
The Pope’s Head Cactus can be found in rocky, dry regions of the Caribbean, Mexico and South America, and provides food to a variety of wildlife species, is an important part of the local environment despite its resistant appearance.
The Pope’s Head Cactus is even more charming when its cephalium bursts into small, fuchsia flowers. Eventually, these blossoms give place to cone-shaped, bright pink fruits. Like a kiwi, the edible fruit is crisp and full of seeds, and it tastes mild and cool. Although it may be tempting to try, be aware of the cactus’ sharp spines and make sure you leave enough fruit for the plant to continue reproducing.
Whether you are hiking through St. Maarten’s nature trails, exploring the island’s beautiful beaches, or admiring the island’s diverse plant life, take a moment to appreciate the quirky and resilient Pope’s Head cactus, one of nature’s true wonders!
