Lohkay was enslaved on a plantation on a plantation at the southern part of the island. When she attempted to escape, one of her breasts was cut off. She managed to get better and escaped again, but this time she remained free. Lohkay gained notoriety for making visits to a plantation, located in Southern Cul-de-Sac, to search for food.
Lohkay stands for defiance against injustice, for rising up in the face of tyranny and oppression. One-Tété Lohkay is one of the island’s remarkable legends. She has been called a female freedom fighter in St. Maarten’s days of slavery and can be considered an example of rising up against oppression.
The One-Tété Lohkay Monument is located in the Little Bay area of St Maarten / St Martin, near the entrance of the Bel Air district.
