DAY 1: CATCHING THE BREEZE AT THE 43RD ST. MAARTEN HEINEKEN REGATTA
DAY 1 HEINEKEN REGETTA
After several days of preparation, the Heineken Regatta has started! The race started with the fleet splitting into two. One half is going to Simpson Bay and the other is going to Cole Bay. The courses for the first days were designed for the boats to have a favorable wind. Multihulls and Bareboats were sent to the eastern side of the island all the way to Oyster Pond. The team that eventually won the first race was ILovePoland, despite their bad start. Wind Whispers finished second and Ambersail II was third.
Some participants admitted that it was a tough racing day, but in the end the teamwork on board was on point and they had good shifts. Each and every team had their struggles as well as their successes.
When the sailing was over, the boats returned to the famous lifting-bridge at Sint Maarten Yacht club. The main item of agenda the first day was sustainability, so a speech was presented to the audience by Sint Maarten Nature Foundation and EPIC ( Environmental Protection in the Caribbean) for the initiative of planting mangrove trees and the beach clean ups. After the speech, the daily prizes were presented. The evening continued at the green zone Soggy Dollars were Freddy Moreira was performing.
