Work in progress: New floating bird viewing platform at Great Salt Pond, St Maarten
The St Maarten Birding and Ecotourism Project will start the installation of a bird viewing platform at the end of August 2023. The location of the floating platform will be on The Great Salt Pond, next to the St Maarten capital, Philipsburg. The Salt Pond is located on the north of Philipsburg and is well known as one of the five most important bird areas (IBA’s). From the floating platform you can view pelicans, egrets, frigatebirds, herons and many more bird species. The Installation of the platform is supposed to create a space and opportunity for the visitors of the island, who want to enjoy the nature and birds that St Maarten has to offer. The floating platform will be twelve meters long stretching into The Grand Salt Pond and can manage up to 15 people.
