Where are you originally from?
I was born in Belgium and left there about 30 years ago to work in St. Maarten. After various postings in the Caribbean, France, Brazil, and the Maldives, I have come full circle and back “home” again to beautiful St. Maarten.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry?
My career has been full of surprises and opportunities! I studied Marketing and Communication Sciences in the university, so I had a great base for hospitality—even though that wasn’t the original plan. I sort of “rolled” into the hospitality industry little by little, by chance.
St. Maarten/St. Martin is known for its rich culture and blend of Dutch and French influences. How does this enhance the visitor experience?
The flavors of both the Dutch and French cuisine, along with many other culinary influences here, mean that you can find almost anything between both sides of the island. There is also a wonderful history here that the islanders are eager to share with our visitors, making this a truly unique and friendly vacation experience!
What sets St. Maarten/St. Martin apart from other Caribbean destinations?
Cultural and culinary diversity. Not only is St. Maarten/St. Martin two separate countries, but we also have a few continents represented here, concentrated on a small island. It makes for a wonderful flavor and rhythm!
Favorite hidden gem or off -the-beaten-path spot on the island?
I love to hike, and there are truly hidden gems of hiking trails and even beaches that are still to be discovered and have a calm, quiet appeal without crowds. For the more active, there are plenty of hot spots, especially beaches, that tempt when you want the bustle.
If you had to describe the island in just three words, what would they be and why?
Something for everyone. There truly is. You can hike, beach, tour, sport, participate in any number of water activities, and learn some of our history. Dining has incredible variety from all the cultures that have influenced the island. It’s very nice to be back home!
