Where are you originally from?
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico to Cuban parents, and I have resided between St. Maarten and Anguilla since 1991.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry?
I originally started my career as an auditor for KPMG. I had audit clients in Puerto Rico and St. Maarten. When the opportunity arose, I went to work for one of my clients in St. Maarten—the Royal Islander Club—as VP of finance in December 1991.
St. Maarten/St. Martin is known for its rich culture and blend of Dutch and French influences. How does this enhance the visitor experience?
For me, the biggest cultural interaction is the opportunity for visitors to engage with people of so many different nationalities. At any point in St. Maarten, you can be surrounded by seven or eight different nationalities. This happens everywhere, from the hotels and restaurants to the shops at every turn during the guest’s visit.
What sets St. Maarten/St. Martin apart from other Caribbean destinations?
It’s the combination of many factors. The island has it all—from welcoming and hospitable persons from all nationalities to fantastic beaches and entertaining activities all over the island. And to top it off, the best variety of cuisine and restaurants—from the simple and basic street chicken and ribs to the most sophisticated French cuisine and everything in between. That is why we are the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.
Favorite hidden gem or off-the-beaten-path spot on the island?
I love seeing the island from the water. You get a totally different feel and perspective. Dawn Beach on a calm day is one of my favorite spots.
Describe the island in just three words.
My special place!
