Frontstreet 88 is the former house of Commander Rink. It was probably built between 1720-1780. Commander Rink was also the owner of a plantation called ‘Retreat’ in the Cul-de-Sac valley.
Rink was a supporter of the Dutch House of Orange in the 18th century and founded the Oranje Compagnie or Orange Company, a St. Maarten organization supporting the Orangist faction opposing revolutionary “Patriot” opponents in the last decades of the 18th century.
The Orange Company captured Fort St. Louis during the 1793 attack on the French side. Though Rink allegedly was unaware of the initial expedition, he came in with armed militia the same day, leading to a two year occupation by Rinks government of both sides of the island until Guadeloupe French forces took possession of the entire island in 1795.
