Royal Princess visits St. Maarten

Former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands spent her second day of her official visit in St Maarten focusing on environmental awareness.

She started her day at the Great Salt Pond Birding Platform where she praised efforts to encourage birdwatching and appreciation of local nature. Afterwards, the Princess toured to Simpson Bay by boat with a stop at Mullet Pond, a protected wetland, and Little Key, where mangrove restoration is underway.

After the boat returned to the Coast Guard station, she witnessed the signing of an agreement that would designate Little Key Island as a protected area. If this legislation is approved, it will mark a historic moment for St Maarten as it will be the country’s first terrestrial protected area managed by Nature Foundation.

The day ended with her attending the re-opening of Princess Juliana International Airport.
