Skiathos Airport: Greece’s St. Maarten for Plane Spotters
Greece’s St. Maarten?
Skiathos Airport, often compared to Sint Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport, is popular among aviation enthusiasts for its close proximity to aircraft.
Located on a small island, the airport has a 1,630-meter runway, mainly handling narrow-body jets like the Boeing 757. The runway is surrounded by water and a nearby town, making expansion difficult.
Tourists and locals gather near the airport’s southwest side to watch planes. However, as with Sint Maarten and Saint Barthelemy, congregating so close to the edge of an active runway comes with some risks. Standing too close can be dangerous due to jet blasts, as seen in two 2022 incidents. While warnings and safety measures are in place, Skiathos remains a thrilling spot for plane spotting, with several vantage points offering great views.
