Today in the Port of Philipsburg: Mega Yacht Moonrise
Special St. Maarten Ship Highlight: Mega Yacht Moonrise
For the many visitors of Great Bay Beach with a view of ships coming in and departing St. Maartens ports, we give you updates on the many vessels visiting Philipsburg St. Maarten Cruise Port and adjacent Mega Yacht Marina Dock Maarten. Todays special visitor is mega yacht Moonrise. Below some facts that give spectators backgrounds on this enormous vessel.
1. Second Biggest Ship from the Feadship Factory
One of the most famous mega yacht brands in the world is Dutch Feadship. It was at this factory that Moonrise was delivered in 2020 with an interior design of Remi Tessier and exterior done by Studio de Voogt. Only the 110 meters long “Anna” ranks larger in the custom made products of this famed Makkum mega yacht builder. Moonrise ranks top 5 of biggest yachts ever built in the Netherlands.
2. 5 Centimeters Short of a Gigayacht
With 24 meters and up, a yacht is dubbed a superyacht. Surpassing 80 meters, a yacht is definitely in the mega yacht class (many saying this class commences at 60 meters already). As yachts keep increasing in size, 100 meters and up is seen as the starting point of the “gigayacht” size. As gargantuous as Moonrise might seem, she runs 5 centimeters short of this classification with 99.95m.
3. Built in the Netherlands, but flying a Cayman flag
Like many mega yachts and superyachts Moonrise might be built in the Netherlands, but its port of registry is the Cayman islands. That means her visit to Dutch Side St. Maarten today makes her being not too far from home from two points of view.
4. A Supercat Support Vessel
A yacht this size often comes with a support vessel. Though it is unknown, whether she will dock in port St. Maarten too today, the task super catamaran Nebula is to assist Moonrise with its needs. These can be personnel and guest changes, fuel and food provision. Nebula itself would classify for many as a mega yacht, as it measures 67 meters in length. The support vessel has a hangar and deck for helicopter traffic to Moonrise and shore. In addition, it boasts a deck for smaller vessels servicing both ships. Nebula also serves as extra lodging opportunity for Moonrise if the latter has all of its eight luxury guest cabins occupied.
5. Featured Yacht in Feadship Commercials
Feadship chose Moonrise to feature in a commercial attracting new workers to the expanding yacht builder. With todays arrival in Philipsburg of this well designed megayacht, something to consider for the large St. Maarten Yachting Industry to do the same.
6. A Facebook Funded Boat
So who can pay a $220 million yacht and a $40 million support vessel, jointly costing $20 million per year in use? The ship is proud property of Ukrainian-American philantropist Jan Koum. Koum sold his company Whatsapp for well over a dozen billion dollars to Facebook in 2014. Should you have funds like that available, we need to disappoint you: contrary to many other superyachts visiting St. Maarten, Moonrise is not a yacht charter for rent.
