US Department of State: St. Maarten Ranks Amongst Safest Destinations in Caribbean
Both Sides of St. Maarten/St. Martin Considered Safe
Regardless of recent unfortunate developments in other parts of the Caribbean, St. Maarten remains ranking amongst the safest destinations in the Caribbean, and by extension the world. For an overview, a recent article on Thrillist.com lists a large sample of safe Caribbean countries to visit and their safety level. Whereas French side Saint Martin is listed explicitly, Dutch side St. Maarten also enjoys the highest safety level (1) in the rankings of the US Department of State.
Meaning of Level 1 Safety
Level 1 is the lowest risk level provided by the State Department. It suggests to “Exercise Normal Precautions”, acknowledging there is some risk in any international travel. For the European Netherlands, St Maarten has the “green” status – also the highest level of safety.
As with any country classified in these safest levels, it always remains advised
– not to go into unknown unlit areas at night
– not to take unnecessary valuables from your hotel room
– not to leave objects of value in our car
Other Safety Accolades
Next to the highest safety levels in government classifications in North America and Europe, over the past years, St Maarten / St Martin has ranked consistently well as one of the safest Caribbean destinations in travel media. TheTravel.com ranked the island amongst the 14 safest Caribbean destinations for solo female travelers. The Manual included it in its top 10 safest Caribbean destinations for 2025, whereas TravelAwaits listed it in its top 7 Caribbean destinations for solo travelers.
